About this deal

Both the traditional and modern pressure cookers have safety features built-in. However, for this article, we're going to focus on modern pressure cookers. Here are the safety features that a modern pressure cooker provides. Delicious and easy. I made half a recipe with added sweet potato, finely chopped, and around 180ml of water (small pressure cooker), which left it perfectly cooked. Would try with more water for a slightly soupier version; might be tempted to add some baby spinach to it for a one-pot with greens. When the pressure goes over, the valve automatically opens up to release pressure. There are two types of pressure release valves featured on a pressure cooker. These are the spring-loaded valves and jiggle top pressure valves. Even though they have a different mechanism, they share the same function of regulating pressure inside the cooker.

Winner. You can clean most stovetop pressure cookers by hand and some are dishwasher-safe. That means you can scrub them and clean them just like any other pot or pan. In modern pressure cookers, there's a pre-set for what type of food you're going to cook. Therefore, you won't have to worry about setting up the pressure. Also, keep in mind that different models of modern pressure cookers have different maximum pressure. They can vary from models and manufacturing. Some are designed to cook a specific food group or are for variety use. Most are made from stainless steel or aluminium, and can double up as a sturdy saucepan. They don’t have multiple functions for different foods like electric models do, but some come with accessories such as steaming baskets.

When you think of pressure cookers, you probably remember the traditional pots that screeched and rattled on the hob. But the next-generation designs we're seeing today should see pressure cookers take their place as an essential and time-saving buy for the modern kitchen. When time is up, release the pressure. You usually do this turning off the heat and letting the pan gradually cool down, or by opening a valve. On some stove-top models you can use cold water – either run it over the lid or sit the pan in a sink of cold water. After the pressure has released, you can open the lid and serve your food. Gone are the days when you need to monitor how much heat you need to achieve the required pressure for cooking. It's very frustrating when you go over or under the necessary pressure. Mainly when it affects the quality of the food. Electric pressure cookers, especially multicookers, generally have smaller capacities than stove-top pressure cookers. The smallest models have about a three-litre capacity, but most are around four to six litres, which should be plenty to make a meal for a family of four. Bear in mind that the claimed capacity, isn't always the usable cooking capacity. Generally we've found that six-litre pressure cookers will have around four litres of cooking space. The Instant Pot comes in a larger eight-litre option, too.

If you want maximum flexibility, look for a pressure cooker that is also a multicooker, such as the Instant Pot. These appliances can double up as steamers, slow cookers, rice cookers, or even have dedicated settings for porridge and yoghurt. Some, like the Ninja, can even grill, roast or bake.
